Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde / Mike Volpe & Cenobite

From TheNCWonline:

It’s a story that could come from the pages of any novel or from any fantastical soap opera, but the truth of the matter is when it comes down to the saga of Mike Volpe it breaks down as a psychological battle of a man at war with himself. I mean what makes a man tick? And what brings him to the point of no return? When Cenobite first arrived in NCW back in 2005, no one was sure of what to make of him. The masked assailant was brutal in his violence, and unforgiving in his psychological torment. All the while former personal trainer to Timothy Pittman, Mike “BAM” Volpe came to NCW looking to make his own way in the promotion, working from the bottom and earning his way straight to the top.

How anyone could know that these two wildly different men were one in the same is beyond this reporter, and it seemed no one else was aware of the dual identity as well, with both men competing separately under the NCW banner. In 2007, while Cenobite was torturing his former tag team partner The Kreeper, he came into contact with the man known as Rob Impact, the man who would forever change his life. While the two men engaged in a series of brutal matches, it seemed Cenobite had met his match. Lucky for him, Impact decided to take a sabbatical from the ring, allowing him to focus more on The Kreeper and Kreeper’s lovely manager Taeler. The mindgames between the two led to NCW NO FEAR, where Cenobite found himself on the losing end of their No Disqualification Match only to attack Taeler after the match, and threaten her physically unless Kreeper did the unthinkable and unmasked before the fans in Taftville, CT. Without hesitation Kreeper unmasked to save Taeler, with Cenobite thrilled over his psychological victory. With Kreeper now competing as the high flying Brandon Webb, the monster Cenobite continued his destructive path all the while Mike Volpe worked hard to make his own impact within the NCW landscape. At the Freda Volpe Memorial Event at the West Warwick Civic Center that September, Volpe challenged his friend and reigning NCW Champion “Dynamite” Doug Summers in a Non Title Match in memory of his Mother. It was a fantastic match that showed the fighting spirit inside Mike Volpe, and the polar opposite of what Cenobite was doing in the ring.

2008 saw Cenobite win gold for the first time in his NCW career, defeating Evan “Hawkeye” Hunter (William King) for the New England Championship in a grueling encounter in Taftville, CT. Not to be outdone, Mike Volpe reached out to none other than Brandon Webb to form an unlikely alliance to win the NCW Tag Team Championship at the 2008 REUNION that April in Pomfret during the Tag Team Title Invitational. It was some kind of cosmic game of who could do better, and neither man was ready to blink.

Cenobite’s reign as New England Champion was short lived however, as Richard Pacifico had other plans in mind. After losing to Pacifico in their Falls Count Anywhere Match at Payback, the monster sunk into a violent rage. That rage spilled over into the life of Mike Volpe, and one of the first people to realize this was Volpe’s tag partner. Putting two and two together, “The Devil’s Reject” learned that his former nemesis was also his Championship teammate, and began orchestrating Cenobite from behind the scenes and away from the ring. The first step was to eliminate Volpe from the situation altogether, and Webb had a master plan. In a shocking development, Webb had paid off his fellow New Bedford wrestlers Da’ Hoodz to come into NCW and injure the knee of his partner, putting him out of action indefinitely. While Volpe sat at home, Webb began working the strings of Cenobite in the ring, pushing him towards a complete mental breakdown. When Rob Impact, Mike’s old friend and training partner from their Slamtech days visited his friend, the truth became apparent to him immediately.

Impact returned to NCW at WrestleFest IV in an attempt to save Cenobite, hoping to help him see the light and merge the two halves of Volpe’s soul into one. The perfect opportunity arose when a referee was needed during Cenobite’s Boston Massacre Match against New England Champion Pacifico. Impact did his best, and helped stop Cenobite from causing further destruction during the match. Unfortunately he couldn’t save himself, as Cenobite unleashed a brutal assault on Impact leaving him a bloody mess in the ring, all the while Mike Volpe remained on the sidelines inside the monsters head.

With Impact seemingly out of the way, Webb continued to play Cenobite like a puppet heading into the 2009 Season. For “The Devil’s Reject” two wrenches were thrown into the plan however, one being the return of Mike Volpe, who was fully healed from his “injuries” while the other was the emergence of the mysterious BerZerker, a man who had left cryptic messages on our website during the off season.

Volpe was more unstable than ever though, having violent outbursts following his matches. Cenobite was now caught in a vicious tug-of-war between Brandon Webb and “The Knight Angel”, as BerZerker tried to push Cenobite back to the side of good. At Payback, after Cenobite defeated The BerZerker in a Lumberjack Match (thanks to the Schillar Park Posse), the former New England Champion had a crisis of the mind, as something inside him told him to stop the madness. Cenobite then disappeared, with even Webb unable to bring him back from the abyss. During this time BerZerker tried to help Volpe get back to 100%, but every so often a glimpse of the monster shone through the cracks.

With Volpe unsure of who to trust, the former Tag Team Champion decided to go it alone while challenging The Schillar Park Posse at WrestleFest V. Meanwhile “The Knight Angel” challenged “The Devil’s Reject” to a “Soul on a Pole Match”, with the winner earning the contents of Webb’s satchel he had begun carrying to the ring in the months since Cenobite’s disappearance. The BerZerker emerged victorious and won possession of the bag, promising to use its contents later in the night. He did just that when he returned during Volpe’s Street Fight, coming to the ring at the perfect moment to give Volpe the strength he needed to power off the Schillar Park foursome. By putting on the mask that was sealed in the bag, Volpe and Cenobite became one, with both entities coming to terms and realizing they needed each other.

Now with the two friends united, Heaven’s Fury has arrived in NCW ready to dominate the tag team world like no other team ever has. The first team in their sights are still The Schillar Park Posse, who still have a penance to pay for their sins during the 2009 year. One thing for sure is that whenever The Posse does catch up to Heaven’s Fury, one hopes they catch Mike Volpe/Cenobite on a good day.

NCW Payback ’09

NCW Payback - Lumberjack Match

At NCW AFTERMATH, “The Knight Angel” finally got his hands on “The Monster from the 7th Circle”, but victory was torn from both men when they battled to a double-count out. At PAYBACK, BerZerker and Cenobite collide again while the NCW roster will surround the ring keeping both competitors inside. What will happen when there’s nowhere to run?

Justice & Evil

When you look into the eyes of a monster, what do you expect to see on the other side?

On Saturday April 4th, it finally appeared that Cenobite may be more human than we ever thought possible. Could the soulless beast that has decimated the NCW roster over the last four years actually be capable of more than violence? Since his debut at the 2005 Big City Rumble, Cenobite seemed hell bent on destruction even at the expense of his own body. Pain was irrelevant to him if he could make his opponent suffer just that little bit more. The desire to hurt others took an unfortunate turn for the worse when Cenobite was fired in 2007 for going after fans, forcing then President Mike Paiva to fire Cenobite on the spot following his Match with Doug Summers at Silence the Violence VI.

But it seemed NCW and Cenobite were destined for each other as Cenobite was brought back at NCW’s 10 Year REUNION by Michael Tootsie Esquire, to take on his brothers bitter rival Rob Impact in an Unsanctioned Match. Impact and Cenobite engaged in a hardcore war, and when it was all said and done Impact actually went to NCW Officials and requested Cenobite be reinstated on the roster so he could teach the monster a further lesson in pain. Sparking this powder keg may have been the biggest mistake of Rob Impact’s career as Cenobite ignited a brutal run on the promotion, unmasking the popular Kreeper while upsetting and dominating Evan “Hawkeye” Hunter to win the New England Championship at the 2008 Big City Rumble. It wasn’t until he came face to face with Richard Pacifico that Cenobite found himself a rival worthy of his previous battles with Rob Impact. The escalating feud between Pacifico and Cenobite came to ahead last November when they collided in The Boston Massacre over the coveted New England Championship and the belt Cenobite had stolen. In a moment of poetic irony a referee was needed to try and maintain peace, and with no one willing to step up to the plate the returning Rob Impact offered his services to mind his former enemy. After Cenobite attacked Pacifico’s girlfriend, Impact took matters into his own hands and helped Pacifico gain the victory and retain his New England Title. Following the Match, Cenobite snapped however taking all his frustrations out on Impact, leaving him a bludgeoned mess. With internal bleeding and a crushed larynx Impact disappeared from the public eye, refusing to answer calls from the front office or even his closest friends. It seemed that in the end, Cenobite did what he always set out to do, to be that unstoppable force of nature bent on destruction.

During the off-season videos began to show up on TheNCWOnline.com, forewarning a Knightfall which would fall upon NCW during the 2009 year. At the first event of the NCW Season COLLISION COURSE, after Cenobite’s successful win over The Phoenix, weird and ominous music began playing singling out the former New England Champion. It was now clear that Knightfall was being directed towards Cenobite, but who was behind it? Who was playing these mindgames? Many had speculated, but nothing was concrete. Not until the mysterious Knight Angel appeared at Silence the Violence, causing Cenobite to chase the figure out of the building and into the streets of Dedham during the REUNION Rumble Qualifier. Things then became crystal clear at Uprising, as Cenobite finally came face to face with the man known as The BerZerker, a phoenix rising from the ashes being born to face off against the darkness. In a classic tale of good versus evil, there is always a hero to stand tall and defend the world against the villain. And while Cenobite has faced many challenges during his time in NCW, facing off with the Rob Impacts, the Kreepers, or the Pacificos, there has never been someone quite like The BerZerker.

When I look into the eyes of the monster? I see FEAR for the first time in a very long time.
